Foodland Farms Ka Makana Aliʻi is officially open, West Side. This store offers a new and unique grocery shopping experience with a focus on good food and we promise the wait was worth it.

Unlike any of our other Foodland Farms stores, Ka Makana Aliʻi was designed to have the largest and most diverse selection of natural and organic brands and products. Plus, buying local has never been easier with a variety of foods and products made, raised and grown right here in Hawaii.

Whether you’re doing a routine grocery run, searching for a quick weeknight dinner or in the mood for a sit-down meal, Foodland Farms Ka Makana Aliʻi has it all. Keep reading for a breakdown of our newest store’s exciting offerings.

Be a chef in your own kitchen.

Busy schedules used to mean delicious and healthy meals with the family would fall to the wayside. Not anymore. Foodland Farms Ka Makana Aliʻi makes home cooking a piece of cake with all our pre-prepped food options made by Foodland’s chefs.

For a fool-proof meal that requires little to no prep, choose Calabash meal kits by Foodland. Available in-store only at Foodland Farms Ala Moana, Pearl City and now Ka Makana Aliʻi, West Side shoppers have access to our locally inspired, restaurant-quality mains and sides that take less than 30 minutes to make.

Feeling ambitious in the kitchen? Our Chef Essentials are time savers that come in handy when cooking recipes from scratch. Located across from our Bowls and Burritos stations, you’ll find a range of house made marinades, dressings, stocks, broths, spice rubs, dips and vinaigrettes.

If you’re looking for a truly easy dinnertime solution, our Family Meals are a no-brainer. Our DIY Kits simply require assembly of ingredients and following the cooking instructions and we offer everything from pizza, to pasta to bulgogi tacos! We also offer premade Take Home and Heat meals. The name says it all, just heat and it’s ready to eat.

Grab and go!

In addition to time savers for the novice and professional home chefs alike, Foodland Farms Ka Makana Aliʻi has a variety of grab-and-go food options for when you just don’t feel like cooking.

Customize your to-go meal at our Bowls and Burrito stations. We’ve got an assortment of greens and grains, meat and non-meat proteins, marinated veggies and toppings to choose from. Here you can create a hearty and satisfying meal that’s a healthy alternative to your typical plate lunch.

Our new Foodland wouldn’t be complete without POKE! So of course, we brought our most popular flavors of Hawaii’s Best Poke, like Spicy Ahi and California, plus a few exclusive flavors fit for the healthy and natural feel of the new store. For guests looking for keto-friendly options, grab a pound of our Salmon Avocado poke. It’s made with a Greek yogurt-based sauce, which makes it keto and super creamy. You’ll also notice a vegan Mango Jalapeno Tofu poke and a Hawaiian Chili Pepper ahi poke with sweet onions in our poke case. And all our ahi is fresh!

Hawaii’s Favorite Steak Plate has also touched down on the West Side with new and exclusive menu items from Build-Your-Own-Bowls, to mouthwatering Pork Candy, to Dynamite Elote and so much more. Located near checkout, customers can place their order in-store, online or by phone. Curbside pickup is available as well as delivery through Bite Squad.

Dine in at Mahi`ai Table.

For the first time ever in Foodland history, we built a full-service restaurant and bar right inside of our grocery store and it’s called Mahi`ai Table. In Hawaiian, mahi`ai means “farmer” or “farming.” With a menu that features fresh ingredients from local farms like Mari’s Table, Ho Farms and MAʻO Organic Farms, we felt this name was perfect for our restaurant. It’s a place where family and friends can enjoy a tasty meal made with the freshest local ingredients. Open for casual breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, guests can reserve a seat by phone or on Open Table.

We hope your interest has been piqued by our breakdown of just a few of the exciting offerings at the new Foodland Farms Ka Makana Aliʻi. But there’s so much more to discover. We hope to see you soon. And remember, this one’s for you, West Side!

Foodland founder, the late Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, was much more than a brilliant businessman.  He was an outstanding community leader too.  Sully’s philosophy of giving back to the community has touched thousands of individuals throughout Hawaii, especially Hawaii’s youth.  So, as we launch our 13th annual Shop for Higher Education scholarship program, we are excited about its mission in helping Hawaii’s students achieve their dreams of attending college and reaching their career goals.

Past scholarship recipients have shared with us their diversified career goals such as becoming emergency medical technicians, educators, artists, government officials, nurses and even astronauts!  Many of these careers can only be attained with a college education.  Without financial aid resources like Foodland’s Shop for Higher Education, many would not be able to afford the high price of college.

That’s where Foodland’s customers come in.  Just shop at Foodland using your Maika’i card and designate your favorite participating high school when you checkout now through March 30. Your designated school will receive the same number of Maika’i points that you earn for your grocery purchases.  And the more points a school earns, the more scholarships it may receive!  You can also help your favorite high school earn more points by purchasing specially marked items – just look for the bright 2x, 3x and 5x bonus point shelf signs.

We encourage you to designate your favorite participating high school and support Hawaii’s deserving high school seniors.  It only takes a moment, and there’s no cost to participate.  So, remember, shop now through March 30, and you won’t just grocery shop … you’ll Shop for Higher Education!

Follow these steps for grilling success!

1. Choose a steak that’s at least 1” thick.

This will ensure the steak can sear nicely on the outside without overcooking.

2. Take your steak out of the fridge one hour prior to grilling.

At room temperature, your steak will cook more evenly.

3. Pat steak dry before applying your rub.

This allows for a better searing and browning of the steak.

4. Preheat grill so it’s completely hot before placing steak on the grill

That high heat will give your steak a perfect crust and lock in those juices. If using charcoal, be sure coals burn until half white before placing steak on grill.

5. Always use a meat thermometer to ensure your steak is fully cooked.

For medium rare, the thickest part of your steak should be at 120-125°F.

6. After taking off the grill, allow steak to rest a few minutes before cutting.

This allows the steak to relax and juices to redistribute.

7. Most of all, remember that ingredients matter.

Choosing Premium Choice Certified Angus Beef® means you’re choosing a truly superior cut of meat that’s tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Simple seasonings like our Pulehu Seasoned Salt Rub really allows the great natural flavor of the steak to shine. Get the Pulehu Seasoned Salt Rub recipe.

“I’m hungry.” This is an unfortunate, but all too common phrase, said by the thousands of people in Hawaii who struggle to find their next meal. The reality is that one in five people in Hawaii depend upon food assistance. The face of Hawaii’s hungry ranges in all ages, from young to old, and across all ethnicities of our island population. Our company founder, the late Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, was an outstanding leader who gave unselfishly and generously. He instilled in us to be a responsible and supportive community partner. It’s an important part of Foodland’s character and why we offer various community programs throughout the year. Foodland’s Bag Up Hunger program is held every year in April. We invite our customers to donate $5, $10, $20 and loose change at checkout. The money raised supports the efforts of the food banks on the four major islands – Hawaii Food Bank (Oahu and Kauai), The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s Food Bank and the Maui Food Bank. The food banks are the key element as they work with hundreds of member agencies to get food to those in need. Charitable agencies distribute more than 12.9 million pounds of food a year statewide. So the next time you shop, please help our island ohana and make a donation. It’s easy, simply tear a $5, $10 or $20 slip from the sign at checkout and give it to your cashier. The amount will be added to your grocery bill. Your donation may feed a child, a friend, a neighbor, a single parent with children, or a grandparent. Please give, because together, we all can make Hawaii a better place to live.

Spring is in the air, and Foodland is happy to offer beautiful, locally grown Easter lily plants. Howard Takishita, owner of Howard’s Nurseries in Kula, Maui, is the green thumb who produces these wonderful lilies because they hold a very special place in his heart. As a young boy, Howard was the first child on Maui to be diagnosed with polio, and it was Maui’s Easter Seals Early Intervention program that helped provide therapy and support for him many years ago. In the spirit of giving back, Howard and Sandy Takishita have provided thousands of potted lilies each year for over 15 years and have partnered with Foodland and Young Brothers to make them available at all Foodland and Sack N Save locations.

Starting today, Easter lily plants are available at all 33 Foodland, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores. What’s special about the lilies is that through a partnership with Howard’s Nurseries, a dollar from each Easter lily plant sold is donated to Easter Seals Hawaii who has been providing services to infants, children and adults with disabilities and other special needs, and support to their families since 1946. That’s over 70 years of service and we are honored to be a part of raising awareness and supporting this great cause.

Here are some tips for maintaining Easter lily plants:

  • In the home, Easter lilies prefer fairly cool temperatures of 60-65 degrees.
  • Never place your lily in a draft or where it will be exposed to heat or dry air.
  • Easter lilies thrive in bright, indirect daylight, but the blossoms will quickly wilt and fade if they are placed in direct sunlight.
  • Turn your lily every couple of days to prevent the stalk from ‘leaning’ toward the light.
  • Easter lilies prefer well-drained soil which is kept moderately moist, but avoid over-watering.

We hope that you’ll purchase your next Easter lily at Foodland. You can make a difference!

Thank you in advance and Happy Easter from all of us at Foodland.

As we kick off our 12th annual Shop For Higher Education program, we are excited about its significant value in helping Hawaii’s students achieve their dreams of attending college and reaching their career goals. Each year past scholarship recipients and their parents tell us how grateful they are for our scholarships.

Without financial aid resources like Foodland’s Shop for Higher Education, many high school seniors would not be able to afford attending college. Seniors have shared with us their wide-ranging career goals including emergency medical technicians, educators, event planners, engineers and doctors. Many of these careers can only be attained with a college education.

That’s where Foodland’s customers come in. By simply shopping with your Maika‘i card and telling your cashier which participating high school you want to designate, you’ll help the school earn points. The same number of Maika‘i points you earn, the school will also earn. You can also help your favorite high school earn more points by purchasing specially marked items – just look for the bright 2x, 3x and 5x bonus point shelf signs. The designation and points earning period runs from February 15 to March 28 at all 33 Foodland and Sack N Save stores statewide.

Since Shop for Higher Education began in 2006, more than 1,198 scholarships have been awarded to college-bound seniors across the state, totaling more than $2.3 million. We encourage you to select from any of the 85 participating high schools and support Hawaii’s deserving high school seniors. There’s no cost to participate, but the value you pass on to deserving students is priceless.

Ever wonder how to cut open this exotic unusual looking Dragon Fruit? Here are a couple quick tips on how to enjoy a delicious locally grown Kona Dragon Fruit:

•Slice the fruit in half, lengthwise, as shown in the picture to the left.

•Scoop out the white (sometimes red or fuchsia) flesh onto a separate dish or bowl.

•The seeds are completely edible (much like a kiwi), so go ahead and dice up fruit into bite-size morsels.

[img_assist|nid=78336|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=758|height=528]
•Next, dice up a ripened mango or papaya (or similar preferred soft fruit) and place into the beautiful dragon fruit shell.
[img_assist|nid=78338|title=|desc=|link=none|url=|align=left|width=758|height=505]
•Mix in the diced dragon fruit and squeeze a wedge of lemon or lime over the fruit salad.

•Garnish with a sprig of mint (optional) and enjoy!

Ask the Chef: What are Rib Tips? https://foodland.com/blog/ask-the-chef-what-are-rib-tips/ Mon, 18 Jul 2016 10:00:00 +0000 https://foodland.com/ask-the-chef-what-are-rib-tips/ Read More

Recently, Chef Keoni was asked about an item we offer in our Weekly Ad. The item was Rib Tips. A customer wanted to know what they were and where they came from.

First off, to make sure we are on the same page, the rib tip we are referring to comes from pork. Now onto the specifics.

The rib tip is a short section that comes off the spare ribs when a butcher is making a more squared off cut. Some customers and restaurants like to have just the rib section when they do barbeque and request the spare rib to be trimmed. The bottom portion that gets trimmed off is where the rib tips come from.

Technically, once the rib tip has been removed from the spare rib, what is left is called the Saint Louis cut, or the Kansas City rib. They typically run 8″ to 12″ long and 1″ to 3″ wide.

The rib tips have cartilage in them, and they are great for cutting up into 2” pieces to use for dishes like Sweet Sour Ribs, black bean ribs and adobo. They can also be used in the same way you would for making dry or wet BBQ. Just know that you will have to work around cartilage instead of a bone.

Click on the video below to view Chef Keoni’s recipe for Sweet Sour Spareribs. Rib tips can also be used in place of spareribs with this recipe.

Today’s consumers are presented with more information than ever before about products available in grocery stores like ours. Signs and labels saying “local,” “organic,” “grass fed,” “gluten free,” and more help us choose what products we want to buy and eat, and they help us identify the foods we feel comfortable and safe serving to our families.

The egg section is no exception. There, we see signs and labels designating eggs as “local,” “organic,” “omega-3 enriched,” “cage free,” and “free range,” giving consumers a wide variety of options to consider. So how does one go about choosing? We thought you might find an explanation of the types of eggs we sell at Foodland useful as you decide which eggs to purchase. We also want to share a commitment our company has decided to make regarding our eggs.

TYPES OF EGGS:
Local: Hens and their eggs are from farms located in Hawaii.
Organic: Hens that lay these eggs are fed organic feed that contains no pesticides, drugs, hormones, antibiotics, or animal byproducts. The classification is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Omega-3: Hens are fed food high in Omega-3 (such as flaxseed) which increases the amount of omega-3 fat in the yolks of their eggs.
Cage free: Hens are not kept in cages. Hens have space to move around and behave naturally – nesting, walking and stretching their wings outside of a cage.
Free range: Hens are cage free and have access to the outdoors to roam.

OUR COMMITMENT:
While the safety and quality of the eggs we sell will always be factors in deciding which eggs to buy, we also recognize that the health and welfare of the hens laying the eggs is of increasing concern to many. At Foodland, we have decided to join many other retailers nationwide in setting a goal to source only cage-free eggs for all of our stores statewide by the year 2025. We know there is much to be done in the years ahead until then and are committed to working with our egg suppliers to ensure a smooth transition. We make this pledge In support of humane animal welfare practices based on the information currently available, and will always continue to make the safety and health of our customers our top priority.
