Attention, shoppers! In case you missed the good news, Foodland Farms Pearl City is now open!

The grand opening on Wednesday, October 30, came after a month of anticipation following the closure of the original Foodland Pearl City location, which served the nearby community for more than 60 years.

Reusable bags in hand, hundreds of eager customers gathered in masses around the storefront excited to catch a glimpse of their new neighborhood supermarket, talk story with Foodland CEO and Chairman Jenai S. Wall and shop the store’s new and exclusive offerings designed especially for Pearl City.

One thing’s for sure, this isn’t your grandmother’s Foodland. The new store blends everything Pearl City residents loved about their former Foodland with Foodland Farms’ modern, reimagined, yet always distinctly local food shopping and dining experiences.

Continue reading for a breakdown of the most buzz-worthy food finds that you must check out.

Pau Hana

Welcome to the in-store bar that truly has something for everyone: sports on TV, a wide selection of local craft beers on draught, wines, Pearl City-themed craft cocktails and a mouthwatering menu of local grinds.

The Class Reunion

Show your Pearl City pride with The Class Reunion. Inspired by Pearl City High School and created by our corporate mixologist and Pearl City native Matt Rosskopf, this purple cocktail is made with Empress 1908 Gin, Carpano Bianco and Stoli Elit Vodka. Other must-try drinks on the menu include The Peninsula, the Pearl Harbor Mule with lychee boba and the Bumper to Bumper Bloody Maria, garnished with a traffic jam of pipikaula and cucumbers.

But the food menu at the bar, imagined by Foodland’s culinary team, is just as noteworthy as the cocktails. It’s so good, it’ll give you [fried] chicken skin…which is on the menu and already proving to be a customer favorite. There’s also Smoked Meat Pizza, Korean Chicken Sandwich, Thai Lemongrass Mochiko Chicken and so much more. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack or want to make a day of it, there’s something on the menu to feed your hunger.

Okazuya

In an effort to memorialize the dying art of okazuya, the culinary team put together a spread of the classic takeout box foods like nori chicken, shoyu pork, corned beef hash patties, shrimp and vegetable tempura, assorted musubi, the list goes on and on. Everything is served fresh, hot and a la carte.

Okazuya

Burritos

Visit the burrito station for a classic burrito, burrito bowl or street tacos with some local flair. Where else can you enjoy a unique local blend of chicken al pastor with cilantro lime rice, kimchee, salsa verde and kochujang aioli? With more than 30 burrito ingredients, the possibilities are endless.

Calabash

Exclusive to Foodland Farms Ala Moana and now Pearl City are Calabash meal kits by Foodland. Mix and match our curated main and side dishes for a restaurant-quality meal that takes less than 30 minutes to cook by even the most inexperienced chefs.

HI Steaks

Hawaii’s favorite steak plate has landed in Pearl City. But there’s so much more than steak to try. Mix it up with a garlic chicken plate, Buddha Bowl or Steak Saimin. HI Steaks even serves breakfast! Whatever you do, just be sure to come hungry.

HI Steaks

Other highlights include the Hot and Cold Bar, the Thin-Crust Pizza station and exclusive varieties of Hawaii’s Best Poke with all your classic favorites too. Find out what all the buzz is about and visit Foodland Farms Pearl City at Pearl City Gateway Center in the former Babies “R” Us location.

Every year we are amazed by the generosity of Hawaii’s people to support its community organizations and their programs. This year, thanks to you, Give Aloha raised more money than ever before for non-profit organizations throughout Hawaii. Many organizations promoted Give Aloha in newsletters, posted messages on their website, conducted e-mail blitzes and utilized the power of social media tools to get the word out that they were participating. As a result, we far surpassed last year’s amount, raising a grand total of more than $2 million dollars! This is an increase over last year by more than $91,000. WOW! Truly, Hawaii no ka oi! We hope all of you know that the nearly 700 Hawaii non-profits that participated in Give Aloha this year are truly grateful for your support.

We are proud to celebrate 15 years of Give Aloha which honors our founder, Maurice “Sully” Sullivan. The legacy he began when he founded Foodland Super Market 65 years ago has touched so many lives, both employees and customers. Sully believed in the importance of taking care of our islands and its people. Give Aloha allows us to continue to honor Sully and support the organizations our customers care about. Together, we are building a better Hawaii!

As Foodland’s celebrates its 65th anniversary, we are proud to remain a local company, deeply committed to our customers and dedicated to making Hawaii a better place. One way we know we can do this is by supporting Hawaii’s seniors in their pursuit of higher education. We are grateful to be in a state where the community – our customers, our vendors, the students, the schools’ college and career counselors and faculty – all take an active part in supporting Foodland’s Shop for Higher Education program.

This past Saturday, May 11th, we hosted our annual awards banquet to recognize and honor our 2013 scholarship recipients. Caitlin Kelly, a 2012 scholarship recipient, delivered a speech about her first year college experience. She shared how she went into college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa as journalism major and was dead set on becoming a reporter at a newspaper. Instead, writing an article about professional counselors strengthened her interest in psychology. That experience further led her to apply for an exchange program at a mainland university, where she’ll be attending in the Fall. Caitlin went on to say how the “twists and turns” of her college experience is what ultimately pushed her to become the person she was made to be. She closed her speech saying, “Receiving the Foodland scholarship meant that I was free to challenge myself both academically and personally because I didn’t have to worry constantly about making ends meet. My family and I are so grateful for Foodland’s generosity and for their desire to support higher education.”

This year marks the 8th year of this program. Since the program’s inception in 2006, Foodland has awarded $2,000 scholarships to a total of 866 students– a total of $1,732,0000.00 in scholarships!

We congratulate our 111 2013 scholarship recipients, who will each receive a $2,000 scholarship. Like Caitlin, we know that college will lead them to things they expect, but also to wonderful life opportunities that they are least expecting. We wish them all the best as they begin this new chapter in their lives.

There’s no doubt, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on earth. And the only way it will stay that way is if we, you and I, take care of it. There’s so many ways we can do this. One is to bring in your own reusable bags whenever you shop at Foodland. There are so many good reasons why you should do this. First, you get to show off how cool and environmentally conscious you are! Two, you protect our island (most important!) and three, you get either a 5¢ credit or 3 Hawaiian Miles for each reusable bag used at checkout. And in honor of Earth Month, Foodland will give DOUBLE CREDITS from March 27 – April 22, 2013. Yes, that’s 10¢ or 6 HawaiianMiles per reusable bag!

Also, the Coca-Cola® Company is partnering with Foodland to celebrate Earth Day. So, from now thru April 22, when you purchase any two (2) DASANI® 1L and/or HONEST TEA® 16.9 oz. bottles, along with using your Maika`i Card, you will receive a FREE Foodland reusable bag! This is a great way to get a reusable bag while staying hydrated on DASANI® or HONEST TEA®.

By the way, did you know that since 2007, when Foodland designed its first reusable bag, there have been a total of eleven designs? The Musubi Reusable Bag has been thus far the most popular. It’s no wonder since Hawaii folks consume the most SPAM per capita. Our new Potluck Reusable Bag is also a favorite for many customers. We hope you’ll join us this Earth Month, and use reusable bags to keep Hawaii beautiful!

Tips to Toast in the New Year with Champagne! https://foodland.com/blog/tips-to-toast-in-the-new-year-with-champagne/ Thu, 27 Dec 2012 10:00:00 +0000 https://foodland.com/tips-to-toast-in-the-new-year-with-champagne/ Read More

The New Year is just around the corner and here are some helpful tips to ring in the New Year with nice glass of bubbly Champagne!

Pouring sparkling wine doesn’t have to be complicated. First off, the best thing you can do for your bubbly is to keep it extremely cold. The colder it is, the more you are preserving the bubbles and the less messy it will be to open and pour.

Don’t over think how you hold the bottle. Sommeliers in fancy restaurants might show off by pouring sparkling wine while holding the bottle with their thumb inside the punt (the depression in the bottom of the bottle), but I wouldn’t recommend trying this unless you have strong thumbs or lots of practice.

To avoid overflowing, don’t try to fill the glass all at once. Pour an ounce or two, wait a few seconds for the froth to settle, then continue pouring. No need to fill the glass to the brim — aim for the two-thirds-full mark. Speaking of preserving bubbles, I’ve read the results of a study that suggests if you pour the bubbly straight down the center of the glass, you might lose more carbonation than if you tilt the glass and pour down the side. If someone offers to refill your glass, it’s OK to offer the glass with a tilt.

Here are a few of our recommended Sparklers to Toast in the New Year!

Under $10:

[img_assist|nid=30633|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=213|height=640]

Korbel Brut
Hawaii’s favorite bottle-fermented champagne, Korbel Brut is light-tasting and crisp with a balanced medium-dry finish.
Perfect to pair with Chicken or seafood dishes, and ono-licious with our local Asian foods. Also, a wonderful choice with fruit and mild cheese.

[img_assist|nid=30632|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=209|height=640]

Vivande Bubbly Pink Moscato
Visually stimulating, the Mourvedre grape is responsible for the attractive rose color. Flavors of the Muscat Blanc include apricot and peach, with floral notes of gardenia and honeysuckle. This off-dry wine is very refreshing, with a crisp balance of acidity and lively bubbles. The simple elegance of Vivande Bubbly Pink Moscato makes it the perfect all-around beverage.

Under $13:

[img_assist|nid=30635|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=196|height=640]
Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut
One of the very best values in California sparklers, super quality at very affordable cost. Delicate pear and floral notes backed by toasty almond. Fun tastes of lively citrus, toast and apple flavors overlaid with persistent effervescence, a creamy mid-palate and toasty finish.
This Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut also earned a 90 Point rating:
“A wonderfully drinkable sparkling wine that appeals immediately for its balanced texture and rich flavors.” – Wine Enthusiast, December 15, 2010

[img_assist|nid=30637|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=176|height=640]

Piper Sonoma Brut
In my opinion, this is our best value choice. Pale gold color with tiny bubbles, Piper Sonoma Brut has delicate aromas of ripe apple, toast and peach. Crisp citrus flavors with hint of strawberries and vanilla smoke. Dry, fresh, bright with a long, elegant finish. Delicious, and very very affordable.

$39 and up

[img_assist|nid=30640|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=179|height=640]
Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label
It is very hard to beat Veuve Clicquot! Cliquot is always on my wish list! Veuve Clicquot’s signature brut non-vintage is loved the world over for its crisp, full flavors, consistent quality and celebratory yellow label. Pinot Noir provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, while a touch of Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay adds the elegance and finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine. Tightly knit, this offers subtle notes of white peach, anise, biscuit and kumquat. The refined finish echoes a smoky note, earning an esteemed 92 Point rating from Wine Spectator!

[img_assist|nid=30642|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=179|height=640]
Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial
Better known to us Hawaii folks as “White Star,” this champagne is simply delicious. A fine effervescence, buttery without being rich, and tropically warm with a lime blossom attack. The palate is delicate well-balanced, creamy and rich, unlimited fragrances filling the tongue with highlights and leaving behind a sense of harmony, mellowness. A medium-bodied Champagne with generous fruit and toasted flavors. Joyous wines, with a generous and seductive personality.
Moet et Chandon is still today, and more than ever before, the symbol of pleasure, grandeur and pure celebration.

[img_assist|nid=30644|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=179|height=640]
Taittinger Brut La Francaise
A fine, very pure style of Champagne. Has hints of toast and citrus fruits that come together in a style that is almost the essence of Champagne. Crisp, rich and complex.”This Champagne is a blend of some 30 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards, respectively 40% and 60% of the total, from several harvests of perfectly ripened grapes. The most expensive grape in champagne is Chardonnay. Hints of marzipan, lightly charred toast add richness, then discover flavors of poached pear, lemon curd and black currant. Earned a notable 91 Point rating from both Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

$299 and up

[img_assist|nid=30645|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=364|height=640]

Brignac Brut Ace of Spades
Okay, okay…we can dream, can’t we? It’s the New Year, so why not drink what Jay-Z and J-Lo drinks? Well okay, maybe only for New Year’s…maybe? This Champagne is truly one of the finest Champagnes produced. A rich and racy wine, complex and full bodied, and deliciously creamy.

Whichever champagne you decide on, just remember that most of all – it is just really good adult grape juice…so have fun, drink responsibly, and enjoy the bubbles!

Cheers to a Happy New Year!

Does it count if I use 10 bags in 1 visit?
Our goal is to encourage our customers to get in the habit of using reusable bags and help reduce bag usage here in Hawaii. With this in mind, to qualify for the 100 Bonus Maika`i Points it is measure on bag usage for 10 shopping trips not how many bags are used in each trip.

Does it count if I don’t use a bag?
Our hope is to help encourage our customers to always think about reusable bags when they shop at Foodland. So we do appreciate no bag being used, but that will not count toward the 10 visits using reusable bags.

Mahalo to all our customers for Taking the Bag Challenge and helping us reduce the number of bags we use in Hawaii.

Mahalo to everyone who participated in Foodland’s Bag Up Hunger program. Together, through your donations at checkout, $10,000 support from Unilever, and coins collected at our Change Angels event near Market City, a total of $58,577.25 was collected for Hawaii’s food banks to support the thousands of people who are hungry in Hawaii. We are truly amazed that nearly $11,000 more was raised this year as compared to last year!

While most of us take eating and the availability of food for granted, there are many others who can’t. On behalf of the hungry children, recently laid-off employees, and others in need living in Hawaii, thank you. From the pennies to the $20s, every donation matters to the 183,000 Hawaii residents who rely upon the food banks.

We are grateful to work together with you, our customers, to make a difference in our community and fulfill such an important and critical need — feeding Hawaii’s hungry. From all of us here at Foodland, thank you once again for your kind generosity.
