It was heartwarming to read a letter we just received from one of our first Shop for Higher Education scholarship recipients back in 2006. She expressed her deep gratitude for the scholarship that she received from us, and explained that it allowed her to focus on her scholastic endeavors and not worry about how she would finance her college education. Having received a degree in Criminology and Law from a California University, she has just been admitted into the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s medical school. She wrote that Foodland’s scholarship “will ultimately allow me to reach my even bigger dream of serving my community as a primary care physician.”
This past Saturday, May 12th, we hosted our annual awards banquet to recognize and honor our 2012 scholarship recipients. It was amazing to hear how active and involved these Hawaii seniors were both in their schools and in their community. Not to mention their educational aspirations, which were very inspiring! I wonder what makes a kid from Hawaii choose to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering or Biomolecular Science? But then again, Hawaii did produce a United States President!
If not for our customers and vendors who support this program, Shop for Higher Education would not be possible. So to you, we say Mahalo! Can you believe that since the program’s inception in 2006, Foodland has awarded $2,000 scholarships to a total of 755 students– that’s a total of $1,510,0000.00 in scholarships! It’s great to know that with the support and giving spirit of all those involved, we are making a positive impact on the lives of future college bound students in Hawaii.
We congratulate our 109 scholarship recipients, who will each receive a $2,000 scholarship. We wish them well as they begin a new journey in their lives.
