You have to try one of the best tasting pear varieties we have here at Foodland, the California Apple Pear! Similar to the taste and texture of an Asian Pear, these California Apple pears are exceptionally sweet and delicious. Personally, I love the crunch and sweet fragrance of the Apple Pear! And, they are on sale this week at Foodland.
Apple Pears are a relatively new fruit to most people, although they have been grown in California since the days of the Gold Rush. There is no need for in home ripening, as apple pears are tree ripened and are ready to eat when harvested. They don’t oxidize (turn brown) like regular apples, and have a long shelf life. You can store them 10-14 days at room temperature or up to three months in the crisper of a refrigerator.
Eating healthy starts with picking the right foods and Apple Pears are a great solution! They are low in calories and high in fiber. They are also a great source of Vitamin C. Try slicing some up and putting them in your next salad; you will be amazed at the sweet and refreshing boost apple pears bring!
Here’s a quick and delicious recipe for Apple Pear Galette:
- Place defrosted puff pastry on a cookie sheet and cover the pastry with a thin layer of caramel.
- Top with sliced Apple Pears and bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
- Sprinkle powdered sugar over the Apple Pears and place in broiler until the tips of the Apple Pears caramelize.
- Serve warm with rich vanilla ice cream. Yummy!
