One of my favorite afternoon snacks is an acai (ah-sah-EE) bowl…I’m eating one right now! For those of you who are well-acquainted with this purple berry from Brazil you know all about the high levels of anti-oxidants and the amazing energy they pack. I am not going to go into great detail about the omega this and the vitamin something that…all that you need to know at this point is that they are delicious and a great way to bring healthy habits to your snacking. If you have never had an acai bowl then stop what you are doing and go out and find your nearest neighborhood juice shop…step up to the counter and order a bowl and then come back here and I will help you make your own. Making one yourself costs less than half of what you will pay for one from a shop…they are easy and fun to make too!
Here’s your shopping list:
- Sambazon Acai Smoothie Packs…these are found in the frozen section and are a 4 pack of individual servings. Two of the individual serving packs = one good size bowl.
- Apple Bananas.
- Apple juice or soymilk. This is used to sweeten the acai fruit and thin it out a bit
- Granola. The Golden Temple Vanilla Almond is bar the most popular and complements the acai flavors very well
Here’s what you do:
- Add the two packets of acai, a splash of apple juice or soy milk and half an apple banana into a blender.
- Blend on high…you might need to add more apple juice or soy milk to get to the desired consistency. It should look like and feel like sorbet when done.
- Put it a bowl and garnish with the other half of the banana (sliced) and granola.
Have fun with it…many people with drizzle a little honey or agave nectar on top for added sweetness. It’s summertime and berries are in season…try extra blueberries or strawberries on top.
Healthy snacking and saving money…woo hoo! I told you they packed a lot of energy…
